Paintings and Sculpture sections are good, photography and new media not so much. Worth buying for the former though. In depth coverage of art, artists and movements. Sort of like a modern art history encyclopedia. Nice, thick glossy pages but they cram a lot onto each page meaning the print is tiny and some of the pictures are a bit small. I would have personally preferred a bit less information and bigger print and pictures. Some of the more famous works are given a full page and the book would have benefitted from more of this.
I am a newbie when it comes to understanding art. Contemporary art has become a favorite of mine and I wanted a good 'overall' book. This one delivers. It's 800+ pages covers topics such as contemporary art periods, info on hundreds of painters, sculptors and photographers and a plethora of artwork photos. A great book for those who, like me, who want a good starting place on the topic. I highly recommend this one!!
Pictures are nice. The way it is categorized is also good, paintings, sculptures etc.. there is a huge index at the end that i found useless.The book is not attractive as a coffee table book.The text is ridiculous. Very complex and difficult. It is like a philosophy essay. Not an easy and educational read. If you want to learn about this art, aside from pics, this book is not right for you.

Its a really nice book, its great for the library or 20th century art class. The images are stunning and its not to difficult to read.
