Since June, I have been waiting on pins and needles for this book. I was so excited, thinking that we would finally get the chance to read about Aang and the Avatar team after the series - spanning from the last episode and leading up to his death. Honestly, all I really wanted was to see images from Aang and Katara’s wedding. Instead, I got another, but poor, rehashing of the Avatar series.‘The Legacy’ was actually Aang’s diary for Tenzin. Aang wanted Tenzin to know his history, about the Airbenders and basically recalling the events leading up to the defeat of the Fire Lord. Katara, Toph and Sokka had 2 pages to add their 2 cents. The book was divided up by the four nations. Aang goes a little deeper into each nation and gives a few interesting facts, like population, bending, seasons of the most births and philosophy. There are random postcards, small posters, and a comic. There aren’t a lot of these and seem forced to make it diary-like. It was an easy, quick read. The font might be a little small. The book is beautifully made. The cover is gorgeous. The pages are good quality. The images are sharp and clean. But the book is incredibly short, despite the price. And my main pet peeve was the artwork. I guessed I got used to the high quality from the other books that I own. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the art work was not good and there was a mix of old and new artwork. It was too much a clash that it was distracting. I don't know if it was because they used a different publisher or what, but it saddened me after seeing such an awesome cover. If you are like me, who collects all the comics and artbooks, it didn’t really bring anything new. Considering the price, the length and the content is definitely not worth it. I would’ve waited if I had known. This is an absolute miss for me. However, if you are coming late into the series or just seen only Korra, this will be a good way to get a quick recap of ATLA. Depending on what you already own, you might get a different reaction than me. In the end, I was disappointed.
Hrm. I was really hoping for something more like a comic with this book, or perhaps like a picture book. Something with a bit of plot. This is just a summary of the series, with a somewhat deceptive title. After all, if you see a book cover of Aang and Tenzin, with the title "Legacy," you think we;re going to get more involvement with Tenzin, but this is basically a scrapbook. If you want to learn more about Avatar, fine, but you're not going to learn much more than what's in the original series. Really you'd be better off getting the comics than this book. And if you're looking for an Avatar-related gift, I'll tell you right now, get the comics! This will be a huge disappointment. For the individual, unless you're a rabid collector, pass on this. See if your local library has a copy, if you really want to read, but pick something else to purchase if you really need some Avatar on your shelf.
I had been looking forward to this book for months, in the hopes that I would get atleast some new hidden info, more about Team Avatar's lives outside of the show and great artwork. It glazes over the whole series, gives details into each nation (some of which would be better off in a farmer's almanac. Seriously, I preordered a book to learn which nation has more babies in winter? Seriously?), and there are some new images, but a lot of clip art/cell grabs inclusions, including one of season 1 Zuko...The writing is mostly line for line or minorly changed from the show. There is a poster included, which has varying degrees of image quality, with some animals obviously just being grabbed from the show and others being faux sumi inked. Pay an artist to finish out the loose ink style, jeez. Some of the souvenir keepsakes were glued on the wrong side, so I couldn't read the back of the postcards.Overall, I think a kid would enjoy it, but buyer beware. Good construction, well printed. If you are an adult fan wanting to hear something cool and new now that we're in a post ATLA and LOK world, avoid unless you just want to collect it for collecting sake. It's 99.9% stuff you already know, with the .1% being drivel.Otherwise wait for everyone to ditch theirs for a couple of bucks.
Was very excited to receive this book. Was a little disappointed to find a large scuff marks across the front of the book. If you're a huge Avatar fan then you will like everything that comes in this book.
The Premise: This is a scrapbook of Aang's adventures with team Avatar put together by the team and orchestrated by Aang for his only airbending child, Tenzin, when Tenzin was just a boy.It comes with a lot of inserts my kids poured over, such as a waterbending scroll, an ad for the Ember Island Players, Appa's lost poster, post cards from BaSingSe and the Fire Nation, among others. It's a lot smaller than the Library editions of the other texts.
I'll be honest, I'm one of those die hard fans so I freaking love this book/memorabilia! That said I can understand some of the lesser star reviews but I only agree bc of the insane high price this jumped to at one point. IMO it should be no more than $15 and personally that's about what I paid so I'm happy. I love the little added extras inside (maps, drawings, etc) and reading it as Aang all grown up talking to his son? Heart melting. So if you're expecting more along the lines of previous graphic novels that have been released yes you will be disappointed. But if you're looking to add to your collection & cherish the characters (as we do in this house) I think you'll be pleased! Hope this helps :)
I became obsessed with the series, have ordered the comic books as well as the hardcover library editions and thought this book would be a great addition. The best part to me is the extras that are tucked away in the pages. There is the Appa missing flyer, a postcard from Ba Sing Se, the waterbending scroll, and much more! The art is fabulous and the pages breathe life back into the characters long after the show ended. It is a spectacular addition to any Last Airbender collection!
